Nils Anders Mortensen er født i Flekkefjord og har spilt piano siden han var tre år. Mortensen har spilt inn fire solopianoplater med musikk av Bach, Grieg, Bartok, Debussy og Brahms. Om plata “Im Freien” skrev Dagbladet: “Musikk som puster [… ] et bemerkelsesverdig fint produkt.” Morgenbladet skrev: “Nils Anders Mortensen spiller, og man bør høre etter. En personlig stemme klinger gjennom nøyaktigheten.” Gjennom sitt samarbeid med sangeren Marianne Beate Kielland har Mortensen også spilt inn lieder av bl.a. Schumann, Schubert, Mozart, Grieg, Webern, Berg og Schönberg. Audiophile Audition skriver om Grieg-innspillingen: “This is one of the finest lieder records I have ever heard, and surely one of the top ten discs of any type that I will encounter in 2014. Grab it.” Innspillingen “Veslemøy synsk” med Thommessens musikk ble Grammy-nominert.
Nils og kontrabassist Knut Erik Sundquist har gitt ut tre plater sammen, i 2019 kom folkemusikkplata «En smuk aftensang». Samarbeidet med strykekvartetten Engegårdkvartetten har også ført til tre utgivelser. Nils har blitt kåret til «Årets debutant» av Rikskonsertene (1996), blitt tildelt Robert Levins Festspillpris (2004) og Nordlysprisen (2013).
Etter studier i Oslo, Paris og Hannover dro han i 1998 til Alta for å bli landsdelsmusiker, noe som i følge Nils selv må være en av de mer varierte og givende musikertilværelser som finnes. Som musiker i Nord-Norge har Nils fått virke innen klassisk og samtidsmusikk, ethno, viser og jazz, med amatører og profesjonelle, på piano og orgel, og som arrangør og komponist.

Nils and double bassist Knut Erik Sundquist have released three albums together; in 2019, they released the folk music album En smuk aftensang. His collaboration with the string ensemble Engegård Quartet has also resulted in three recordings. Nils was named “Debut Artist of the Year” by Rikskonsertene (1996), awarded the Robert Levin Festival Prize (2004), and the Nordlys Prize (2013).
After studies in Oslo, Paris, and Hanover, he moved to Alta in 1998 to become a regional musician—something Nils himself describes as one of the most varied and rewarding lives a musician can have. As a musician in Northern Norway, Nils has worked in classical and contemporary music, ethno, folk songs, and jazz, with amateurs and professionals, on piano and organ, and as an arranger and composer.
